St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Coder IV - RCS Coding in Apple Valley, California

We are looking for Coder IV for the RCS Coding Department at St. Mary Medical Center.

Location: Apple Valley, CA

Work Schedule: Full time - 80 Biweekly hours

Shift: 10-hour, Days

Job Summary:

Under general supervision appropriately assigns DRGs, APCs, ICD-10 and CPT to all patient account types according to AHA and UHDDS guidelines. This is a credentialed coder/abstractor position responsible for coding levels up to and including Inpatient – All types of cases, Outpatient Clinical, Emergency Room, Same Day Surgery, and Observation.

Essential Functions:

  • Codes a variety of patient charts which include Inpatient Newborn, Inpatient Obstetrics, Observation, Same Day Surgery, Emergency Room and Outpatient Clinical, meeting all regulatory guidelines and standards applicable in the coding industry.

  • Abstracts into the database clinical and demographic data from patient medical record as required by OSHPD.

  • Monitors and performs follow-up on uncoded accounts to ensure timely billing.

  • Partners with the discharge planner or other applicable staff members in order to assure appropriate and accurate documentation in patient records.

  • Make corrections to OSHPD data submitted to state.

  • Retrieves records as needed.

  • Answers phone and provide appropriate customer service to all.

  • Reports quality control issues to appropriate individuals.


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.

  • Knowledge of DRGs and APCs.

  • Current knowledge of ICD-10CM and CPT codes.

  • Current knowledge of Windows, 3M coding software, and MEDITECH/Legacy.

  • Current knowledge of State and Federal regulations regarding fraud and abuse, uniform hospital discharge data set standards.

Minimum Position Requeirements:

Experience: 1 year CPT and ICD-10-CM acute care hospital coding experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS preferred), or

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) / Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) with acute care coding experience.

Preferred Position Qualifications:


  • Associate's Degree Medical Record Technology.

  • Coursework/Training Completion of a certified coding program with intense anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease process and pharmacology.


  • 3 years Inpatient coding in an acute care setting.

  • Experience in other clinical or healthcare disciplines.
