We are looking for a Staff Registered Nurse for the Surgery Department at St. Mary Medical Center.

Location: Apple Valley, CA

Work Schedule: Full time - 80 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 8-hour, Days

Job Summary:

Within the identified roles of Practitioner, Teacher and Leader, the staff Registered Nurse provides collaborative and comprehensive care based on patient and/or family needs. The staff Registered Nurse implements and evaluates care delivery based on predicted outcomes while anticipating potential responses provides assessment, treatment and care throughout the hospital and outlying clinics. The staff Registered Nurse will practice in accordance with all regulatory, professional, legal and hospital policies. The Staff Registered Nurse works independently under limited supervision directly reporting to the Unit/Department Supervisor, Director of Assistant Vice President.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs a complete patient assessment that encompasses the patient’s physical, physiological, emotional and spiritual status.

  • Formulates a nursing diagnosis based upon the patient assessment and develops and implements an individualized patient care plan that is based upon collaboration with the patient and the assessment of the patient.

  • Performs procedures/treatments, administers medications and provides nursing care based upon established clinical practice (policy and procedures), the patients plan of care and physician orders.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the care plan through observation of the patient’s physical condition and behavior, signs and symptoms of illness and reactions to the treatment. Through communication with the patient and the health team members, including shift to shift report modifies the plan as needed.

  • Develops, coordinates, and implements the individual patient/family education plan together with the multidisciplinary team.

  • Provides and documents patient/family education within the Registered Nurse’s scope of practice. Communicates effectively with members of the health care team with regard to patients condition and needs.

  • Acts as the patient/family advocate as circumstances require by initiating action to improve health care or to change decision or activities which are against the interest or wishes of the patient or family and by giving the patient/family the opportunity to make informed decisions about health care before it is provided.

  • Coordinates discharge planning of the simple patient and obtain necessary orders for discharge.

  • Delegates tasks to Team Members based on scope of practice, competencies and qualifications.

  • Effectively supervises care being given by Nurses Aides, Licensed Vocational Nurses and Student Nurses.

  • Participates in orientation of new employees and student nurses.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking capabilities.

  • Participates in continuing education programs offered by SMMC. Assists and participates in committee work as requested. Is an effective member of the healthcare team and participates in 75% of department and unit staff meetings.

  • Knows staff nurse is a team member in the Utilization Management process.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary conferences.

  • Documents patient specific data/information concisely and thoroughly, according to hospital and regulatory agency requirements.

  • Completed all CEU requirements in accordance with RN license renewal.

  • Surgery (Surgical Services), 742100-K01:

  • Complies with OSHA guidelines and practices universal precautions.

  • Collects, interprets, records and communicates pertinent data that are relevant to the patient's care in surgery.

  • Utilizes data collected for intraoperative nursing care.

  • Follows standard procedures for surgical interventions along with preferences of the surgeon and anesthesiologists, when planning for intraoperative care.

  • Uses the data collected to formulate nursing diagnosis regarding the health status and needs of the patient.

  • Conveys the plan of care to other members of the health care team.

  • Provides direct care to patients to meet their physical and psychological needs dependent upon their age and level of comprehension.

  • Continually evaluates the patient's response to nursing interventions and modifies the nursing care plan to achieve the desired outcome.

  • Collaborates with other disciplines to revise the patient care plan according to the changing needs of the patient.

  • Handles all patient communication in a confident and ethical manner.

  • Communicates patient needs to the appropriate individuals of the surgical team.

  • Acts as a preceptor for new employees/cross training.

  • Participates in call coverage to meet daily needs of the department.

  • Promotes good working relationships among staff and other departments.

  • Team Leader, Surgery (Surgical Services):

  • Serves as a resource to the staff, provides leadership to the team and delegates tasks appropriately and ensures care is given in a timely manner.

  • Determines staffing assignment according to DHS staffing ratio requirements and patient acuity, considering staffing guidelines and staff competencies. Ensures completion of acuity for the following shift.

  • Responsible for mentorship of agency personnel, new staff and float personnel.

  • Leads the team in an atmosphere of customer service orientation and professional behavior.

  • Assists with the change process with innovations for continually improving patient/caregiver satisfaction.

  • Attends 90% of the Team Leader meetings and 80% of the staff meetings.

  • Completes Pyxis discrepancy count.

  • Assigns task to staff and ensure completion.

  • Ensures check of Code Cart, malignant hypothermia cart, and Latex allergy cart.

  • Communicates with outpatient services and PACU team leaders in regard to delays or problems.

  • Performs environment of care rounds daily; focusing on:

  • OR suites.

  • Cases for next day pulled.

  • Temperature logs for refrigerators completed.

  • Assures all anesthesia Pyxis are locked between cases, as well as at end of shift.

  • Ensures general cleanliness of OR halls, center core, and nursing station.

  • Assists staff and provide clinical direction as needed, utilize educators when available.

  • Maintains communication with the Supervisor and Hospital Shift Supervisor

  • Provide accurate and timely feedback to unit supervisor on staff performances.

  • Provide direction to Scrub Techs, nurses, surgery schedulers, surgical services assistants, and Biller.

  • Surgery (Open Heart), 742100-K01:

  • Utilizes data collected for intraoperative nursing care.

  • Follows standard procedures for surgical interventions, along with preferences, of the surgeon and anesthesiologists, when planning for intraoperative care.

  • Participates in call coverage to meet the daily needs of the department.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of routine and special surgical procedures in the Surgery Center

  • Demonstrate knowledge of specific uses for all surgery-related equipment, instruments and supplies for accurate setup of the Surgery Center operating room suites.

  • Attends ongoing education specifically related to the surgical specialty areas to maintain competency, a minimum of three educational classes per year. (Two eight hour education days are provided by the medical center).

  • Develops educational programs to upgrade clinical competencies. Conducts two programs per year to validate competencies.

  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures relating to specialty areas/new technology, two annually.

  • Meets with the specialty physician on a monthly basis to help determine operational needs and focus on customer service issues.

  • Surgery (PACU/OPS/GI), 742100-K01:

  • Utilizes data collected to plan for the postoperative nursing care following standards of practice for planning and assessing the patient in the postoperative period.

  • Participates in call coverage to meet the daily needs of the department.

  • Surgery (Anesthesia), 742100-K01:

  • Sets up arterial lines as requested.

  • Assists Anesthesia provider during life and/or limb-threatening emergencies with blood, fluids, medications, etc., in Surgery, C-section Room, or wherever requested.

  • Assists Anesthesia provider in Pain Clinic by monitoring the patient.

  • Assists Anesthesia provider during difficult intubations. Is familiar with Difficult Intubation Cart and equipment.

  • Gives input to Anesthesia Department chair during budget process.

  • Must be willing to work on-call as requested by the Anesthesia care provider.

  • Other duties as requested by Anesthesia care provider.


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge of nursing procedures.

  • Ability to troubleshoot basic nursing and unit specific equipment.

  • Team Leader, Surgery (Surgical Services), 742100-K01:

  • Knowledge of theory and techniques in scope of practice.

Minimum Position Requirements:


  • Associate's Degree

  • Coursework/Training - Other training as specific to unit requirements.

  • Coursework/Training - Environmental Orientation within 30 days of hire.

  • Coursework/Training - General RN competency within 30 days of hire.

  • Coursework/Training - Unit Specific competency within 90 days of hire.


  • 6 months Surgery (PACU/OPS/GI), 742100-K01:

  • Recent experience (PACU, ICU, and/or ED).

  • 2 years Surgery (Anesthesia), 742100-K01:

  • Experience in OR, ED, ICU or PACU.


  • Current California Registered Nurse License by evidence of Primary Source Verification.

  • Current BLS.

  • Other certifications as specific to unit requirements.

  • Surgery (Open Heart), 742100-K01:

  • ACLS Certification (Advanced Cardiac Life Support).

  • Preferred: CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room).

  • Scrub/circulate four major surgical specialties (Cardiac, Neuro, Ortho, Vascular, General, GYN).

  • Surgery (PACU/OPS/GI), 742100-K01:

  • Current ACLS certification (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) within 6 months of hire.

  • Current PALS certification (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) within 6 months of hire.

  • Preferred: CSPAN certification (PACU only).

  • Surgery (Anesthesia), 742100-K01:

  • Current ACLS.

  • Preferred: PALS.

Preferred Position Qualifications:


  • 2 years experience in a hospital environment.

  • 2 years Team Leader, Surgery (Surgical Services), 742100-K01:

  • Experience in hospital nursing practice.
