The chief executive (CE) will be a well-respected, experienced healthcare executive who is committed to advancing the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center (PSJMC) ministry. The CE will ensure continued growth, innovation and delivery of exceptional care. Working collaboratively with the community ministry board, medical staff and executive management team, the incumbent will articulate a strategic vision that differentiates PSJMC in a competitive and changing marketplace. They will be accountable for continued organizational growth, operating results, quality and advocacy for patients, families, physicians and employees. The leader will promote a culture in line with Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s mission, vision and values. The CE will exhibit servant leadership and compassion for the workforce. They will work to strengthen physician engagement and to promote effective board, employee and community relations. The incumbent will provide leadership to ensure the delivery of high quality, patient-centered, cost-effective healthcare consistent with the organizational mission, vision and goals, and in accordance with the healthcare needs of the communities served. In addition to this position’s primary focus as the CE of PSJMC, this individual will be a senior leader within the larger Providence and an integral member of the Providence Southern California Leadership team.
The CE is expected to accomplish several key objectives within the first 12 to 18 months. The following goals present some of the main objectives for the position:
Maintain strong employee engagement.
Develop and articulate a physician alignment strategy to successfully engage medical staff and community physicians. Foster a culture of trust and partnership with physicians. Engage with physicians in strategic development and ensure that their practice flow is flexible and efficient to improve their work experience.
Optimize clinical excellence and performance in quality, patient safety and patient experience outcomes; raise PSJMC’s clinical profile.
Supports the optimization of strategic Clinical Institutes across the Service Area in collaboration with local and regional partners.
Develop a strong governance/advisory council for, involving physicians and other key stakeholders in strategic initiatives. Form a robust leadership structure that encourages collaboration and eliminates silos.
Assess and develop a cohesive relationship with PSJMC’s executive management team.
Be a visible leader who engages employees across the organization and promotes a supportive culture built upon trust; focus on workforce development initiatives.
Identify and develop strategies to strengthen financial performance in order to achieve growth projections.
Launch initiative to promote PSJMC’s brand in the community as the destination hospital in the region.
Identify and develop growth strategies to expand PSJMC’s geographic services beyond its traditional market boundaries.
Create a strong partnership with philanthropy by integrating development into the overall strategy, and participating in donor-facing activities
Assess the current service offerings and identify opportunities to grow the outpatient arena.
Support system integration efforts across Southern California ministries.
EXPERIENCE WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH PHYSICIANS
Clinical background (MD, RN, etc.) is a plus.
EXPERIENCE WITH VALUE-BASED REIMBURSEMENT MODELS
Track record of leading quality, safety and patient experience initiatives.
EXPERIENCE WORKING IN A COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT
CA local market knowledge and experience is preferred.
PHILANTHROPIC FUNDRAISING EXPERIENCE
Serving as the public face of PSJMC, developing relationships with business and community leaders and enlisting their support in philanthropy.
EIGHT OR MORE YEARS IN SENIOR HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP ROLES
Either as a chief executive or in another senior leadership role.
10 YEARS WORKING WITHIN A HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATION OF COMPARABLE SIZE AND COMPLEXITY
Experience within a multi-site, matrixed integrated system is preferred.
FAITH BASED HEALTHCARE EXPERIENCE
P&L OVERSIGHT OF $500M
Track record of strengthening financial performance using revenue growth and expense reduction strategies.
EXPERIENCE LEADING BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND STRATEGIC PLANNING INITIATIVES
Mergers, acquisitions and joint venture experience a plus.
MASTER’S DEGREE OR CLINICAL BACKGROUND REQUIRED
Master’s degree in health or hospital administration, business administration or a clinical or related field is required.
