St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Polysomnography Technologist - Sleep Center in Eureka, California

We are looking for a Polysomnography Technologist for the Sleep Center Department at St. Joseph Hospital Eureka.

Location: Eureka, CA

Work Schedule: Full Time - 72 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 12-hour, Nights

Job Summary:

The Polysomnographic Technologist is a health professional who demonstrates competency in all required therapeutic and diagnostic modalities provided in the Sleep Disorder Center and may be required to work variable shifts.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans work assignments and responsibilities to assure that all procedures are consistently completed each shift.

  • Prepares patient for polysomnographic study. Obtains accurate clinical information and historical data from patient.

  • Explains planned diagnostic procedures and goals to patient. The patient demonstrates understanding of information presented.

  • Performs nocturnal polysomnograms. MSLT’s and CPAP evaluations while following written departmental policies and procedures.

  • Ensures with 90% accuracy that every recording is well calibrated, adequately labeled and artifact free with good impedances.

  • Ensures with 90% accuracy that each record has an adequate recording of: EEG, EOG, EMG, Thermocouple Airflow Sensor, Pressure Transducer Airflow Sensor, Snore Sensor, Cardiac lead, Respiratory Effort Belts and Oximetry.

  • Scores polysomnographs accurately with standards set by the department and completes the record within 48 hours of the study. Scorer demonstrates understanding of patient’s diagnosis.

  • Provides a verbal description of tracings, when requested by the physician. Assists the physician with review of the polysomnograph recording when requested.

  • Performs with 100% accuracy data entry and word processing of the patient’s record and ensures that documentation of each polysomnographic procedure is preserved.

  • Evaluates supply inventory every week. Helps with ordering and maintaining inventory of necessary supplies.

  • Performs preventative maintenance and quality control on equipment per department standard and uses precaution to prevent damage or loss of sensitive and expensive medical equipment.

  • Sets up and changes equipment in accordance with the department infection control standards and performs procedures for cleaning of equipment daily.

  • Has the ability to recognize life-threatening episodes and take appropriate action required to see that an emergency team will arrive to help with a patient when needed.

  • Receives and records verbal and telephone orders correctly in medical record.


  • Resource Utilization: Ensures that appropriate supplies and equipment are available, accounted for and used in a cost-effective manner.

  • Safety: Helps to provide a clean, comfortable environment for customers and others by taking appropriate safety precautions and responds to urgent safety situations effectively.

  • Productivity: Organizes, prioritizes and completes activities and assignments in an efficient manner. Demonstrates initiative in assisting others and performing other duties based on skill level and training orientation.

  • Quality Improvement Program: Participates in department problem solving, suggests improvements, and facilitates change.


  • Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, staff, patients and their families.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of testing procedures and hook-up specific Sleep Medicines Polysomnographic tracings and treatments.

Minimum Position Requirements:


  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT), or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) with a Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) designation.

  • Current Medical Board of California Polysomnography Registration.

  • Current CPR certification.

Preferred Position Qualifications:


  • Coursework/Training - Completion of a basic training course in Polysomnographic skills by a school of sleep medicine.

  • Coursework/Training - Completion of medical terminology course.


  • 1 year experience in a Sleep Disorder Center.

  • Background as a Sleep Technologist, Respiratory Therapist or an EEG Technologist.
