St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Mental Health Worker - Psychiatric Acute Adult in Laguna Beach, California

We are looking for a Mental Health Worker for the Psychiatric Acute Adult Department at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

Location: Laguna Beach, CA

Work Schedule: Full time - 72 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 12-hour, Days

Job Summary:

The Mental Health Worker serves as a member of the nursing team under the direct supervision of a registered nurse providing direct and indirect care. The Mental Health Worker is responsible for collecting and reporting of information to the supervising RN or Charge Nurse and completion of all patient care related tasks and documentation. Additional responsibilities include ADL's, vital signs, patient observations/rounding and to observe safety risks throughout the unit.

Essential Functions:

  • Patient Safety and Care: Rounds for safety check /room checks and secures contraband items. Follows JCAHO safety goals. Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies, procedures and regulatory requirements. Assists with activities of daily living (ADLs), meal set-up and feeding, hygiene, toileting and vital signs. Applies knowledge of suicide awareness and safety risk identification in observations and interactions with patients at risk for self-harm, injury or who have legal holds. Assists with patient transfer and ambulation as requested. Reports identified risks, abnormal vital signs, patient behavior concerns and safety issues immediately to RN. Participates in team meetings.

  • Admission and discharge process: Performs patient admitting functions of reviewing unit admission forms, obtaining signatures and handling patient belongings for safety and in accordance of patient rights. Prepares for patient discharge by clearing room, obtaining personal belongings/pharmacy items and coordinating other discharge information with healthcare team.

  • Milieu: Rounds regularly during shift to all areas of unit to check on security of unit for safety and maintaining program milieu. This includes appropriate rooms locked, halls cleared. Security concerns are immediately reported to RN.

  • Patient Rights: Demonstrates knowledge of patient rights and applicable legal requirements for behavioral health patients through communication and interactions with patients and staff. Assists with emergency situations under direction of nursing for safety of patient.

  • Customer Service: Answers phone calls, greets and directs all patients and visitors in a timely, friendly and courteous manner. Receives positive feedback from co-workers and patients. Supports unit goals to improve the patient experience.

  • Technical: Performs EKG according to established policies and procedures, accurately obtains patient’s vital signs. Disconnects and reconnects O2 tubing appropriately. Supports RN in obtaining accurate weights. Application and removal of restraints. Assists with basic orthopedic devices as directed by the RN. Performs other technical duties appropriate to area of practice under direction of the RN.

  • Visitor management: Checks in visitors according to visitor policy and safety needs of unit and patient.

  • Documentation: Records required information on designated department forms and EMR accurately and within expected timeframes.

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology/anatomy.

  • Ability to work with others in a flexible, cooperative manner.

  • Moderate mental application and concentration to handle varying procedures and interruptions.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Experience: 6 months experience providing direct patient care as either a MHW, PCT, CNA or LPT in a behavioral health or chemical dependency inpatient, residential or outpatient program/unit.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Crisis Prevention Certification upon hire or completed within first week of orientation.

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS.

  • Hires after 7/1/2019:

  • Current CNA license, Or

  • Completion of first semester nursing program, Or

  • Current LPT (Licensed Psychiatric Technician) license.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Education: Coursework/Training - EKG Training.

Experience: 1 year Behavioral Health experience or related experience.
