St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Pharmacy Technician (Certified) - Pharmacy in Napa, California

We are looking for a Certified Pharmacy Technician for the Pharmacy Department at Queen of the Valley Medical Center.

Location: Napa, CA

Work Schedule: Full Time - 80 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 8-hour, Nights

Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assists in all phases of departmental operations including dispensing, sterile product preparation, data entry, report generation, packaging, record keeping, stocking, delivering, billing and clerical duties. No item prepared by a Pharmacy Technician may leave the department prior to being checked by a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Certified Checker Technician.

Essential Functions:

  • Accurately fills unit dose cassettes utilizing daily cart fill list from patient profiles.

  • Accurately prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile products (including parenteral nutrition, epidurals and PCAs) from daily label prints and patient profiles.

  • Accurately prepares new/missing patient medication and sterile product orders during shift.

  • Accurately prepares and delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas per established schedule and in response to urgent need.

  • Picks up orders, medications, and sterile products for return to Pharmacy from patient care areas on scheduled delivery rounds.

  • Charges and credits patient accounts daily.

  • Replenishes floor stock medications. Generates reports, pick lists, labels as required. Schedules IV Room orders daily as assigned.

  • Completes and documents assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly, maintaining areas neat, clean, and free of outdated medications.

  • Supervises and instructs pharmacy students.

  • Has access to and/or handles medications according to the standards set by the Medical Center.

  • Follows up on all questionable items within medication history by seeking information from appropriate sources such as family, primary physician in a manner that is professional and non-invasive.

  • Completes accurate medication data collection with each person being admitted from E.D.

  • Collects and compiles a complete and accurate list of patient’s home medications including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements including drug name, strength, dosage, route, frequency, and last dose taken in a timely manner.

  • Diligently seeks and records accurate information regarding all of the patient’s home medications, any known drug allergies and reactions from the patient, family or primary physician in a manner that is professional and non-invasive.

  • Uses MEDITECH system to record home medication list.

  • Collaborates with all members of the health care team to review the patient’s medication list for any discrepancies, including duplications, omissions, interactions or name/dose/route/confusion.

  • Follows all policies regarding hygiene and patient contact.


  • Knowledge of:

  • Hospital Pharmacy Practice.

  • Drugs, solutions, and delivery systems.

  • Basic pharmaceutical terminology and calculations.

  • Current law and regulation relating to pharmacy practice, including limits on pharmacy technician activities.

  • Aseptic compounding techniques.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with people with diverse backgrounds and all levels within the organization and in the community.

  • Ability to create and foster a cooperative team work environment.

  • Ability to perform accurate and timely data entry regarding medications.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Knowledge of commonly used prescription drugs including brand/generic names available dosages, frequencies and indications.

  • Ability to have patience with sick or aging patients.

  • Preferred: Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Minimum Position Requirements:


  • Coursework/Training - Pharmacy Technician internship or equivalent educ/experience

  • Coursework/Training - Pharmacy Technician training course or equivalent educ/experience


  • Current California Pharmacy Technician certification.

  • National certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Position Qualifications:


  • 2 years Hospital Pharmacy Technician experience.

  • I.V. Admixture experience.

  • Unit Dose experience.
