THE ROLE

Under general direction of the Vice President of Operations, the Executive Director works with the management team of St. Joseph Hospital to plan, organize, staff, direct, coordinate, control the activities, and lead inpatient and outpatient Surgical Services Department (main campus and Pavilion Surgicenter) and Endoscopy Services in the delivery of patient care and quality outcomes. Develops strategic plan and goals for specialty areas that are in alignment with the mission, vision, values and future direction of the organization. Demonstrates innovation and creativity in development and implementation of programs and solutions. Effectively communicates strategic initiatives and involves others in planning and decision-making. Collaborates with other leaders in the organization to create a seamless approach to patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Facilitates the development and management of the surgical services delivery process for designated surgical units ensuring that policies, procedures, standards of care, and standards of practice are consistent with current research and practice across the organization. Networks and collaborates across the health care industry striving for best practices. Tries new approaches and takes appropriate risks. Thinks broadly and creates an environment of continuous improvement.

  • Promotes a free flow of information and communication throughout the organization. Creates culture where it is safe to share differing views. Communicates needs, issues and concerns appropriately. Delivers clear, convincing, and well-organized presentations; projects credibility and poise even in highly visible, adversarial situations.

  • Develops processes and programs to continually promote, measure, and improve employee, physician and patient satisfaction.

  • Develops long-range plans for area of specialty that are in alignment with the mission, vision and values of St. Joseph Hospital. Designs action plans and programs that achieve the overall objectives of Surgical Services and the organization.

  • Partners with physicians and care team to ensure that quality clinical outcomes are achieved; establishes effective working relationships with all key physicians.

  • Ensures excellence in patient care delivery consistent with JCAHO, Title 22, and other related regulatory agencies through annual performance appraisal, competency based practice standards and ongoing competency validation and proficiency of the clinical staff.

  • Develops, monitors, and analyzes labor, operating, and capital expense budgets in assigned areas and assures appropriateness of human and material resource allocations. Achieves budget targets within specialty. Works collaboratively with the St. Joseph Hospital management team to achieve a unified approach.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS

Required experience/education for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare or related discipline

  • 3 years of experience as administrative director in surgical services

  • Computer experience

  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills

  • Ability to problem-solve, analyze situations, think critically, give constructive feedback and supervise and team with others

  • Ability to develop and manage operating budgets.

Preferred experience/education for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Healthcare or related discipline.
