Providence Health & Services Phlebotomist in Pacific Palisades, California


Providence is calling a Phlebotomist (Full Time/Day Shift) to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Pacific Palisades, CA.

We are seeking a Phlebotomist who will obtain accurate and reliable blood and body fluid specimens from properly identified patients. Identifies phlebotomy difficulties, defines appropriate solutions and coordinates resources. Maintains outstanding relationships with client and clinic staff.

In this position you will:

  • Use sterile collection technique in handling collection devices, preparing skin, and in procuring sample(s) for analysis.

  • Assure proper preservative/anticoagulant is used for collection.

  • Provide positive patient identification and labels samples accurately and completely to assure patient demographics, safety, and quality assurance standards are met.

  • Enter lab test into the computer system and promptly delivers specimens to the appropriate testing area.

  • Receive, prioritize and schedule requests for laboratory work. Provides the necessary instruction for preparation of patients when indicated by test requested.

  • Maintain adequate supplies for work area; coordinates receipt and delivery of supply requests.

  • Interpret, transcribe and file physician test requests. Identifies and resolves basic discrepancies and directs inquiries to proper technical staff.

  • Assure proper collection of specimens for drug screening programs, using established protocols and remaining current on all new procedures.

  • Project positive, professional public relations image, maintains excellent rapport with internal and external clients.

  • Receive phone calls, accurately relay test results or test status, answer basic questions, refer/transferscalls to clinical staff or providers.

  • Consider the age or developmental needs of the patient when providing care.

  • Attend continuing education seminars and department meetings for further understanding of departmental procedures and changes.

  • Foster a teamwork environment.

  • Receive, accurately process and distribute specimens in a manner that assures proper preservation of samples and timely analysis and reporting of results.

  • Print out lab reports daily, places on patient chart and distributes to the appropriate physician for review.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Education to meet certification, license or registration requirement.

  • California Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification (CPT 1) .

  • Current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers.

  • 1 year recent clinical experience as a certified phlebotomist.

  • 6 months working in a high-volume setting as a certified phlebotomist.

  • Knowledge of clinic ambulatory care outpatients.

  • Knowledge of specimen handling and collection requirements, general laboratory workflow, and basic medical terminology.

  • Skill to effectively perform venipuncture and capillary collection.

  • Computer skills including accessing information and data entry.

  • Demonstrates ability to remain poised, professional, and tactful during medically urgent situations.

  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with patients, clients, and co-workers in a clinic setting.

  • Demonstrates ability to work in a team environment.

  • Recognize and resolve phlebotomy problems.

  • Consistently handles technically difficult situations not covered by instructions to produce optimal results.

  • Demonstrates ability in collection of quality samples under difficult circumstances from medically challenged patients.

  • Competent in entity specific outpatient phlebotomy procedures.

  • Self directed, detailed oriented and able to work without supervision.

  • Highly motivated and able to take initiative, solve problems and make decisions.
