Providence is calling a Behavioral Health Intake Coordinator - RN (FPer diem/Day shift) to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro in San Pedro, CA.

We are seeking a Behavioral Health Intake Coordinator - RN who will be part of the San Pedro Behavioral Health intake team that will evaluate patients on behalf on Little Company of Mary Medical Center – San Pedro within Los Angeles County. The PECC evaluates patients within emergency departments, hospital medical units and community residential centers such as assisted livings, board and cares to determine if patients meet the criteria for Involuntary Hospitalization Holds (5150) and voluntary placement. The PECC also provides make referrals to community resources when patients do not met the 5150 criteria or voluntary placement.

The PECC is an authorized Licensed Mental Health Professional, having completed all requirements for Los Angeles County LPS designation to evaluate and/or place mentally disordered persons meeting criteria for Involuntary Hospitalization on 5150 Holds to Providence Little Company of Mary – San Pedro for 72-hour emergency intervention.

The PECC customarily exercises discretion and independent judgment free from immediate supervision. However, the PECC may be required to contact Behavioral Health Leadership when evaluating medically and socially complex patients to ensure compliance with Los Angeles County LPS laws and organizational policies/procedures. The PECC will work close with the Behavioral Health intake team and units to coordinate care and transportation to San Pedro. This position requires providing care and/or service to a mentally ill geriatric patient population in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional and/or developmental age of the individual served.

In this position you will:

  • Function independently in the community (Los Angeles County) as mental health evaluator on behalf of the ministry

  • Provide clinical assessment and evaluation of individuals for the purpose of crisis intervention which may include a determination for a 5150 involuntary detainment as a result of a mental illness

  • Evaluate medical diagnoses and needs in conjunction with mental health needs to determine level of care and placement for patients

  • Knowledge of mental health diagnosis and substance abuse conditions

  • Knowledge of the various treatment levels and settings for patients requiring mental health or substance abuse services

  • Ability to discuss financials, obtain clinical information from potential patient and collateral sources such as family, referral representative, mental health and medical professionals and other pertinent professionals to determine appropriateness of admission

  • Collaborate and consult with ministry and community hospital clinical staff (physicians, nursing, social workers, etc.) regarding recommendations for intake versus referral to other sources

  • Refer patients to other community agencies/services when it is determined that patient doesn’t meet ministry behavioral health program criteria and requirements

  • Communicate approvals/denials to potential patient, family member, referral representative, mental health and medical professionals as appropriate

  • Complete intake screening and ensures timely documentation (ie. Contact form, intake logs, etc)

  • Collaborate and maintain communication with the behavioral health intake team and units to ensure timely assessments and smooth care transitions

  • Work closely with the clinical supervisors, department leadership, department medical directors and ministry administration

  • Maintain poise under crisis conditions. Follow through on managing crises until resolution (i.e., patient placement or referral to the treatment team/clinical supervisor for case consultation)

  • Ability to learn quickly as technology and insurance requirements change

  • Knowledge and experience with State, Federal and other regulatory Compliance Regulations, including: Medicare Secondary Payer, EMTALA, and ABN

  • Knowledge of Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and ministry policies and procedures

  • Complete annual LPS competencies

  • Ensure all documentation required by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health is correct and submitted in a timely manner, pertaining to this role

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and utilizes electronic and automated work tools (e.g., online access tools to payers, work drivers)

  • Handle information with utmost confidentiality and discretion ensuring the protection of confidential information related to client information according to internal, HIPAA and other regulations

  • Travel throughout Los Angeles County

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Current CA Registered Nurse

  • Current BLS-HCP – Basic Life Support - for Healthcare Providers - American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) - CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer accepted on hire until card expiration date.

  • Designated as a Behavioral Health Clinician to perform 5150 evaluations within 9 months of hire. Must follow the policies and guidelines by Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health for LPS designation and keep their designation in current status

  • Requires 3-5 years of behavioral health intake experience in a behavioral healthcare setting including assessments and referral functions for acute psychiatry services

  • A minimum of 2 years of nursing in an inpatient psychiatric unit or psychiatric urgent care center or similar experience

  • Experience with payers and obtaining authorizations

  • Healthcare workplace violence prevention certification within 6 months of hire

  • Requires advanced communication skills to communicate effectively with patients, interdisciplinary team physicians and the community. Must be able to fluently speak, read, write and understand English

  • Requires flexibility and strong self-motivation / organizational skills to prioritize work and make decisions with minimal supervision

  • Requires computer experience / literacy as needed for the job

  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing; physical agility to manage patients; push, pull and lift up to 40 pounds; intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping; drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment urine drug screen, and as defined by the RU-91 form

  • Requires a courteous and cooperative service-oriented demeanor

  • Maintains California Automobile License and Auto Insurance

  • Knowledgeable of mental health and substance abuse conditions and their treatment; levels of care/settings within Behavioral Health; and community resources

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • A minimum of 2 years of substance abuse treatment experience within an inpatient or outpatient setting

  • BSN from a CCNE accredited education program
