Description:

Providence is calling a Respiratory Therapist (RCP) (Per-Diem/Variable Shift) to Providence Little Company Of Mary San Pedro Hospital in San Pedro, CA.

We are seeking a Respiratory Therapist (RCP) who will perform, management, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities which affect the pulmonary system and associated aspects of cardiopulmonary and other systems function within the scope of practice of Respiratory Care Practice Act 1996. The Respiratory Therapist perform a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment of initiative to apply prescribed treatments and testing in a safe, professional manner. The Respiratory Therapist is a certified or registered therapist who is accountable and responsible for the delivery of direct respiratory care to all age ranges of patients from neonates to adults and through the assignment and direction of the Patient Care Leader, utilizing a collaborative care patient management process, meeting established standards of respiratory care and integrating other health care team members.

In this position you will:

  • Use the clinical processes of assessment, respiratory diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation for all patients, documenting the same.

  • Perform the duties of a RCP as defined in the role description, at a proficient level.

  • Demonstrate competency in selected technical and psychomotor skills.

  • Administer breathing treatments per physician prescription including: HHN, CPT, Continuous Bronchodilator Therapy, etc.

  • Perform ABG and related quality control, once hospital documented competency is acquired.

  • Report abnormal ABG to M.D. or R.N. giving accurate interpretation as requested, utilizing Critical Value Reporting Policy.

  • Assist in emergency situations following established procedures.

  • Identify patient and family respiratory care education and learning needs and implement measure to meet those needs. (ie: pulmonary hygiene).

  • Responsible for all equipment aspects associated with respiratory care, to include monitoring, application, utilization, assembly, cleaning, etc. (to include but not limited to e.g., handheld, ventilators, etc.).

  • Demonstrate sound basic knowledge in the caring and the decision-making process for a designated patient population.

  • Addendum: "Respiratory Care" defined (RCP PRACTICE ACT 1996):

  • Direct and indirect pulmonary care services that are safe, aseptic, preventative, and restorative to the patient.

  • Direct and indirect respiratory care services, including but not limited to, the administration of pharmacological and diagnostic and therapeutic agents related to respiratory care procedures necessary to implement a treatment, disease prevention, pulmonary rehabilitative or diagnostic regimen prescribed by a physician and surgeon.

  • Observation and monitoring of signs and symptoms, general behavior, general physical response to respiratory care treatment and diagnostic testing and:

  • Determination of whether such signs, symptoms, reactions, behavior or general response exhibit abnormal characteristics.

  • Implementation based on observed abnormalities of appropriate reporting or referral or respiratory care protocols, or changes in treatment regimen, pursuant to a prescription by a physician and surgeon or the initiation of emergency procedures.

  • The diagnostic and therapeutic use of any of the following, in accordance with the prescription of a physician and surgeon:

  • Administration of medical gases, exclusive of general anesthesia.

  • Aerosols.

  • Humidification.

  • Environmental control systems and baromedical therapy.

  • Pharmacologic agents related to respiratory care procedures.

  • Mechanical or physiological ventilatory support.

  • Bronchopulmonary hygiene.

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

  • Maintenance of the natural airways.

  • Insertion without cutting tissues and maintenance of artificial airways.

  • Diagnostic and testing techniques required for implementation of respiratory care protocols.

  • Collection of specimens of blood.

  • Collection of specimens from the respiratory tract.

  • Analysis of blood gases and respiratory secretions.

  • The transcription and implementation of the written and verbal orders of a physician and surgeon pertaining to the practice of respiratory care. "Respiratory care protocols" as used in this section means policies and protocols developed by a licensed health facility through collaboration, when appropriate, with administrators, physicians and surgeons, registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory care practitioners, and other licensed health care practitioners.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Formal training in pediatric respiratory care which includes didactic and clinical experience.

  • Current California State Respiratory Care Practitioner license required.

  • RRT required for all new grad Respiratory Therapist applicants hired on or after 1/1/15

  • Note: Respiratory Therapists credentialed prior to 1/1/15 are grandfathered as CRT.

  • Pulmonary diagnostics to include ABG certification and quality control.

  • Current BCLS certification required.

  • Must obtain completion of PALS and ACLS certification within six months of hire. (Applicable only to acute care Therapists).

  • Maintains working knowledge of applicable regulatory agency standards and the Respiratory Care Practice Act.

  • Demonstrates competency in selected technical and psychomotor skills.

  • Demonstrates sound basic knowledge in the caring and the decision-making process for a designated patient population.

  • Demonstrates competency and working knowledge of the Hospital Information System and good working knowledge of computer skills.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Membership in a professional organization; CSRC, AARC.

  • One (1) year of experience inAcute care setting, to include adult critical care.

  • Neonatal Intensive Care experience.
