We are seeking an Endoscopy Technician who will assist the physician while performing endoscopic procedures (intraprocedure) and to provide appropriate patient care pre-and post-procedure under the supervision of a registered nurse/MD.

In this position you will:

  • Prioritizes work and provides prompt and efficient service.

  • Demonstrates competency in selected skills. Includes but not limited to:

  • Handling specialized instrument.

  • Cleaning and maintaining scopes and instruments.

  • Basic airway management per BLS.

  • Specimen obtainment and processing.

  • Assisting in appropriate endoscopic procedures.

  • Assisting in the admission and discharge process.

  • Positive public relations image and working relationships.

  • Obtaining necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence.

  • Completing all mandatory requirements.

  • Patient Care Responsibilities:

  • Understands and effectively functions as an assistant to the physician under supervision of the RN.

  • Assists with procedures performed by the physician as assigned (EGD, Colonoscopy, PEG Placement, ERCP and other GI procedures).

  • Assists RN staff with preparation of the patient, i.e., having patient change to hospital attire, attaching monitoring leads, BP cuff and finger probe, and procedure specific equipment.

  • Assists with the admission and discharge of patients.

  • Communicates with the patient in conjunction with the RN as to what will occur during and after the procedure.

  • Transports patients to and from the department, as requested utilizing proper body mechanics.

  • Transports patients by appropriate safe mode according to patient needs.

  • Assist the physician in the G.I. Lab and special procedure area by handing the appropriate instruments.

  • Knows the function of all instruments and accessories and demonstrates appropriate use.

  • Assures that the patient is in the designated procedure area at proper time.

  • Prepares the procedure rooms prior to the procedure.

  • Turns over a procedure room in an efficient and organized manner.

  • Closes down the rooms at the end of each working day.

  • Notifies the physician and/or RN assigned patient of change in patient’s condition.

  • Schedules patients while coordinating anesthesia, physicians, nursing and other needed departments.

  • Enters patient data accurately in Meditech and GI computer system.

  • Age-Appropriate Care:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of age appropriate patient preparation.

  • Demonstrates applied knowledge when caring for selected patient populations including care appropriate to the age of patients served on the unit.

  • Cleans/Sterilizes/Maintains Non-Disposable Supplies/Equipment:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of proper technique in handling specialized instruments, i.e. scopes.

  • Cleans and maintains flexible scopes and instruments per protocol.

  • Demonstrates proper use of the reprocessing equipment.

  • Maintains reprocessing equipment logs according to procedure.

  • Arranges and examines the instruments and equipment required for procedure.

  • Consistently checks light sources, instruments, and accessory equipment for proper functioning.

  • Notifies nursing staff/MD when equipment is malfunctioning.

  • Able to “Trouble Shoot” endoscopy equipment.

  • Follows established guidelines for cleaning disinfecting, sterilization, storage of endoscopes and accessories following endoscopic procedures.

  • Cleans and stores instruments and accessory items properly.

  • Supply Management/Procedure Preparation:

  • Demonstrates proper preparation of procedure rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies to perform the procedure both in and out of the department (radiology, OR, ICU, ED).

  • Orders supplies.

  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and accessory items.

  • Notifies charge nurse when/if a problem occurs with ordering a specific item.

  • Performs duties in a cost-effective manner, in an effort to avoid waste of hospital resources without jeopardizing quality of care and service.

  • Restocks procedure rooms daily to maintain adequate PAR levels.

  • Demonstrates timely communication of reportable problems with equipment, supplies, procedures, or patients and requests assistance as appropriate.

  • Utilizes equipment efficiently and supplies judiciously.

  • Completes patient charge master accurately, and is able to enter charges into Meditech accurately.

  • Professional Conduct:

  • Employee has a willingness and ability to perform additional duties and responsibilities on an as needed basis or as determined by management.

  • Follows established hospital and department policies.

  • Maintains unit productivity by flexing home as directed during periods of low census/acuity.

  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own performance on team in regards to:

  • Attendance and punctuality.

  • Obtaining necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence.

  • Completing all mandatory requirements.

  • Attending and participating in team meetings.

  • Volunteering or accepting assignments for projects.

  • Specimen Handling:

  • Prepares cytology slides and pathology specimens assuring the correct fixative.

  • Consistently and accurately prepares specimens.

  • Assures specimens are picked up on a timely basis.

  • Prepares patient charge and laboratory slips.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications:

  • Education to meet certification, license or registration requirement

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS)

  • 1 year work experience or related healthcare experience

  • Able to prioritize, organize, coordinate patient care

  • Computer skills

  • Close concentration, high degree of accuracy

  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certified Nurse Aide, OR Tech, or Endoscopy Tech
