Providence Nurse Manager - Med Surg/Oncology in Tarzana, California

Providence is calling a Nurse Manager (Full-Time/Day Shift) to the Med Surg/Oncology Unit at Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center in Tarzana, CA.

We are seeking a Nurse Manager who will be responsible for ensuring superior patient/customer satisfaction via the highest quality care and service. Directs and supervises functions and activities in assigned areas. Provides leadership in the professional practice setting. Advocates for the protection and rights of individuals, families, communities, populations, healthcare providers, nursing and other professions, especially related to health and safety. Implements and interprets policies, procedures, standards, and regulations for personnel, patients, medical staff, and the public. Provides duties in any nursing capacity as needed. Adheres to the ANA Nursing Administration: Scope and Standards of Practice.

In this position you will:

  • SERVICE:

  • Promote patient, physician and employee satisfaction by personal example, treating all contacts with respect

  • Develop strategies to achieve hospital goals for customer satisfaction

  • Support and participates in activities that foster customer service

  • Integrate ethical provisions in all areas of practice

  • Communicate and follow the organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues, when appropriate

  • PEOPLE:

  • Maintain required applicable licensure, certification and education

  • Attend and successfully completes general and department orientation, in-service programs and the annual key competencies and mandatory update requirements

  • Effectively lead and actively participates in department staff meetings

  • Demonstrate mastery of verbal and written communications

  • Create a healthy work environment for staff; creates, implements and monitors action plans related to employee satisfaction

  • MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Meet monthly budget target in wage (SWB) and non-wage (OCE), as well as productivity standards, on an ongoing basis

  • Meet contract labor budget with a variance of no more than 5%

  • Complete 100% of staff evaluations on time

  • Meet the established vacancy rate

  • Meet the established turnover rate including 90 day, 1 year, and annual turnover

  • Assure balanced staffing schedules are complete and posted in a timely manner

  • Monitor and adjusts staffing patterns based on patient care requirements and unit needs consistent with productivity measures

  • Assure 100% staff attendance at hospital required classes

  • Initiate peer interviewing in the department for at least 50% of open positions

  • Knowledgeable regarding Joint Commission safety goals; ensure that safety goals are followed on the unit(s) of responsibility

  • Review Unusual Occurrence Reports in a timely manner; notice trends and informs Director and CNO of emerging issues immediately

  • Comply with established departmental policies and procedures, objective, safety, and environmental and infection control standards

  • Demonstrate knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings; and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner. Applicable for the populations: Adult and Geriatric

  • Effectively communicates information, verbally and in writing to customers, co-workers, and key individuals to ensure team cohesiveness

  • Provide direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care

  • Provide leadership for the unit, ensuring appropriate care and interventions, as well as customer service focus

  • Demonstrate and models professionalism, critical thinking, clinical judgment and partnership in all interactions

  • Treat all people with respect and is responsive to their needs

  • Establish and maintains a positive, professional image of nursing by supporting and cultivating strong nursing morale on unit(s)

  • Ensure an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment. Is able to use all patient care equipment in the area

  • Direct maintenance of departmental facilities, equipment, supplies and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort, and safety of patients and staff

  • In charge of daily operations. Inspects area daily for compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards and takes corrective action when violations occur using the steps of progressive discipline

  • Assure complete and accurate documentation of the nursing process for each patient; ensures accurate maintenance and confidentiality of the patient’s medical record

  • Maintain required unit records, reports, and statistics for administrative purposes and budget preparations

  • Assist in the coordination of student clinical experience and the orientation of new staff

  • Actively participate in the development and application of systems that enhance professional staff development

  • Enhance own professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops

  • Effectively manages the human resources of the unit

  • Assure adequate staffing and skill mix for provision of services

  • Monitor and evaluate work performance, including customer service component for all levels of staff

  • Appropriately interviews, hires, reviews, promotes, transfers and separates personnel

  • Provide disciplinary action that is fair, objective, developmental and timely; monitors performance improvement plans for staff, as needed

  • Complete staff evaluations on time

  • Delegate assignments appropriately based on individual levels of competence

  • Evaluate all codes in the unit/department for quality and appropriateness

  • Review trends in acuity data regularly and ensures that acuity is used in staffing

  • Achieve/maintain certification in specialty area or nursing leadership

  • Actively participate in a professional organization related to specialty or management

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related field

  • Current California RN license

  • Current BLS-HCP

  • Current LA City Fire Card within thirty (30) days of hire

  • Two plus (2 ) years of clinical experience in area of specialty with proven managerial skills

  • Coursework/Training: Management of Aggressive Behavior within ninety (90) days of hire

  • Ability to deal with multiple priorities and short time frames

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Specialty Certification in area of clinical expertise or management/leadership (recognized by ANCC)

  • Current Advanced Life Support card(s) (applicable to age of patient population) for managers in all Critical Care areas, Emergency Department, Perioperative Services, GI Lab, Cath Lab
