Providence Director of Nursing - Emergency in Torrance, California

This position has overall responsibility for Director functions, financial oversight, strategic direction and leadership for the ongoing effective operational functions including development, setting objectives, planning, staffing implementation, evaluation and directing the educational, clinical, research, administrative and outreach activities of assigned departments/areas of responsibility in all aspects of Emergency Services.

This includes day-to-day responsibility for process and performance improvement activities as they relate to nursing and ancillary caregivers and assists the Medical Directors in carrying out the same functions for the physicians. Accountable for the continuous assessment, improvement, coordination and integration of the department's services, standards of care that supports the strategic goals for the Emergency Department and Community Outreach. This is accomplished by exerting a leadership role which supports the hospital's mission, vision, goals and objectives while focusing on the patients, physicians, caregivers, volunteers and the community as customers. This position must be a role model for the ministry's core values.

Directs patient care in the Emergency Department and extension of care areas to include ED overflow and critical care transport. Interprets the philosophy, objectives and policies, accomplished by sophisticated strategies of creative problem-solving, critical thinking, strategic planning, team development and leadership.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Strategic Planning:

  • Analyzes the current healthcare environment (internal and external) to identify, assess and evaluate changes that could affect the organization.

  • Demonstratives ability to deal with ambiguity in relationship to the healthcare industry.

  • Collaborates in setting and implementing a strategic plan for Department to meet clinical care, quality and business objectives.

  • Develops and implements operational objectives that accomplish the goals of the strategic plan.

  • Participates in the development of the organizational Disaster Plan goals and objectives.

  • Assures that the scope of services and/or standards of care for Emergency Department conform with and support the organization and/or nursing division’s philosophy.

  • Directs goal and objective development for Emergency Department that contributes to organizational and/or divisional goals and reflects the unique work of the unit.

  • Accountable for the development and implementation of the philosophy, objectives, policies and standards for the Emergency Department.

  • Ensure that quality and safety in the provision of patient care is a top priority in standards development, implementation and oversight.

Marketing:

  • Evaluates and formulates marketing plan for divisional area based on the hospital mission statement and strategic plan in partnership with Business

  • Development partners.

  • Develops and implements methods to attract and maintain current customers.

  • Develops and implements methods to monitor customer satisfaction.

  • Develops and implements methods of change based on customer research and fiscal considerations.

  • Act as a resource to management and support staff for unit specific marketing.

Leadership:

  • Develops a collaborative effort between the Emergency Department and the entire healthcare organization and medical staff in the areas of problem solving, risk taking and resultant change.

  • Develops a mentor relationship to assist in the development of future healthcare leaders.

  • Provides support and direction to management staff in supervising and coordinating daily operations of department.

  • Represents department at related committees, i.e., medical staff, organization or system.

  • Participates in and/or supports where appropriate nursing science research.

  • Facilitates caregiver, physician, and/or customer conflicts/concerns in a manner which creates win-win situations.

  • Responsible for compliance with all financial, regulatory and professional standards.

  • Responsible for developing and/or revising department, organizational or divisional policies and procedures.

Finance:

  • In collaboration with Finance, Executive Director and CNO, develops the annual operating and capital budgets. Acts as a resource to management and supervisory staff on all aspects of the budgeting process to include projections of volume, revenue, salaries and supplies.

  • Identifies and prioritizes the capital equipment plan. In collaboration with Finance and Supply Chain procures capital equipment.

  • Identifies strategies to manage budget for areas of accountability.

  • Identifies components of variances and explains specific variations between budgeted and actual figures and recommends changes as indicated.

  • Develops a results-oriented environment by encouraging financial accountability and responsibility at all staff levels.

  • Develops and strengthens collaborative efforts between Finance, Information Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Respiratory, Inpatient Nursing, Information Systems and Supply Chain.

Development/Information Management:

  • Assesses and makes recommendations for development of medical information documentation systems directed at enhancing communication between caregivers and improving overall continuity of care.

  • Ensures the organization’s commitment to maintaining confidentiality of patient information through development, maintenance and monitoring of related policies and procedures.

Leadership/Supervision:

  • Performs a wide variety of organization and Human Resources functions including:

  • Performance evaluation of leadership team and caregivers.

  • Recommendations of promotions, demotions and other disciplinary actions.

  • Assures the proper handling of disciplinary actions.

  • Provides authoritative backup for leaders as part of their decision-making process.

  • Stresses the importance of measurement in developing standards of performance.

  • Maintains a collaborative relationship with the nursing bargaining unit.

  • Able to work varying hours and handle difficult situations as they arise.

  • Oversees all Department ordering, stocking of supplies and equipment, restocking and par levels maintenance.

Development:

Performance Improvement/Quality and Safety:

  • Identifies areas of improvement in services and utilizes the Lean methodology to carry out and document these activities. Uses other performance improvement tools and resources to advance and promote quality and safety in practice and patient care.

  • Identifies and monitors key indicators related to the functioning of the department results per procedure.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related healthcare field, or in process of obtaining Master’s Degree in Nursing

  • Upon hire: California Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)

  • Upon hire: Greenbelt Certification or equivalent performance improvement certification, or successes

  • Upon hire: BLS and ACLS certification

  • 10 or more years of acute care hospital experience in a large healthcare system

  • 5 years of progressive hospital leadership positions

  • Demonstrated multi-site integration of hospital departments or service lines

  • Solid financial background gained through both operational and business planning experience

  • Developing strategic plans and initiatives

  • Demonstrated experience/outcomes with Lean methodology and workflow design

  • Experience with new construction of departments or remodeling/design

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of national healthcare trends, multi-disciplinary professional practice models, reimbursement principles, information systems, cost management, quality management, and customer service needs

  • Work efficiently and effectively in a matrix structured environment

  • Understand the needs and preferences of customers served and manage efficiency in the department

  • Must use cognitive thinking skills, strong ability to lead and facilitate multi-disciplinary groups, develop effective teams, actively move succession plans forward and prioritize and organize work in an accurate and timely manner
